Η Proton Τράπεζα Α.Ε. (διακριτικός τίτλος Proton Bank) ιδρύθηκε το 2001 και ξεκίνησε επίσημα τη λειτουργία της το 2002 ως επενδυτική Τράπεζα. Το Δεκέμβριο του 2005 εισήχθη στο Χρηματιστήριο Αθηνών. Το 2006 η Proton Τράπεζα απορρόφησε την Omega Τράπεζα.
Το 2008 οι βασικοί της μέτοχοι συμφώνησαν να πουλήσουν πακέτο μετοχών στην Τράπεζα Πειραιώς, με σκοπό τη μετέπειτα απορρόφησή της Proton από την Πειραιώς. Η συμφωνία ακυρώθηκε με αίτημα της Proton και τη σύμφωνη γνώμη της Πειραιώς, όταν η πρώτη έκανε αίτηση για να μπει στο πρόγραμμα βοήθειας της ελληνικής κυβέρνησης.[1] Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2009 ο επιχειρηματίας Λαυρέντης Λαυρεντιάδης απέκτησε το 31,3% των μετοχών της τράπεζας. Από εκείνη την περίοδο μέχρι και τον Μάρτιο του 2011 υπήρξε αύξηση 70,7% στα επιχειρηματικά δάνεια που χορήγησε η τράπεζα, αύξηση που αντιστοιχούσε σε 806,979 εκατομμύρια ευρώ, σύμφωνα με μηνυτήρια αναφορά που κατατέθηκε το 2012.
